Liquid biopsy and cell-free DNA

For decades, histologic and pathologic analysis in routine oncology has been predominantly performed on tumor tissue obtained from biopsy or resection. However, this approach is invasive and does not come without risk, oftentimes not even being feasible due to advanced disease. Here, we introduce circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA), which contains circulating-tumor DNA (ctDNA) in patients with cancer for precision oncology applications.
